Monday's Prayer

Lord, help us to be self-controlled.

Looking at the world around us, I personally think lots of issues would be solved with the simple act of self control. Sometimes I feel like I am surrounded by of a bunch of toddlers having a fit on the floor of life. And, I have to admit sometimes I can be one of those toddlers--yes, me!

1 Peter 1:13-16 states: "Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy.'"

This verse states that if I am going to be self-controlled I must first prepare my mind. I must remind myself of my purpose and the ultimate goal. Secondly, I must allow the Holy Spirit to work in my life, because ultimately, self control is a "fruit" (result) of the Spirit. Lastly, I must put my hope in Jesus and His grace to help me overcome my desires to have it my way.

In John 14, we are told that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. So, let's follow Him as He leads us towards the things that really matter --- the right direction, the true values, and the abundant life we can have here on this earth!
